New Zealand - Kristin Armstrong
of the ExergyTWENTY12
team started her season with a bang last week when she won
the opening stage time trial
at the Tour of New Zealand.
Racing for the USA National Team, Armstrong rode her Felt F1
to a decisive victory on a rainy day, finishing the short, technical 7.1km course in 10:15.
Armstrong’s teammate Evelyn Stevens finished the TT second, 17 seconds slower. That result would prove decisive in the end. After protecting her lead for three days, Armstrong happily relinquished the GC lead to Stevens on Stage 4. Stevens got into a breakaway on the 110km stage that gained more than 7 minutes on the main field.
“We had a couple of cards to play today,” Armstrong said after the stage. “We had 11 seconds with two days to go, and for the last two days Judith [Arndt] has been quicker than I have, so we knew if we put Evelyn up in the front group we felt good about her sprinting against Shara Gillow."
The tactic worked, and the USA team took the win. Meanwhile, Armstrong, a two-time World Champion in the time trial, finished eighth overall and showed great form for February.
