Greenville, S.C., Aug 31, 2008—Team Garmin-Chipotle riders dominated the day at the USA Cycling Pro Championships Sunday, with Blake Caldwell taking second in a sprint finish with eventual winner Tyler Hamilton. Caldwell was followed by third-place finisher Danny Pate, with fourth going to Lucas Euster.
A hot, humid day in South Carolina meant for a war of attrition. There would be just 44 finishers, and the hot tempo set by early pacesetters Stephen Cozza and Dave Zabriskie helped initiate the suffering behind.
In the end, a five-main attack in the final circuits drew out the finest. Not surprisingly, three of them were Garmin-Chipotle riders. Lucas Euster, Caldwell and Danny Pate joined Jeff Louder and Tyler Hamilton to vie for the top prize following the 177k stage in Greenville.
Caldwell attacked Hamilton in the finale, but the veteran was able to counter, swing left and make a sprint of it with the Garmin-Chipotle youngerster. The two lunged for the line, and the photo finish would require review to determine the victor, with Hamilton taking it by .002 hundredths of a second.
Pate and Euster crossed four and five seconds later, respectively. With Tom Danielson finishing sixth as well, Garmin-Chipotle placed four riders in the top 10.
