Euser Wins Univest GP!
Saturday, September 6, 2008
Sept. 6, 2008, Souderton, PA—They may have been grey skies, but the sun shone upon Lucas Euser of Team Garmin-Chipotle as he scored his first career victory by outfoxing his breakaway companion in a sprint, winning the 160-kilometer race in 3:50:48.
The road race, meant to mimic a European event with undulating topography in suburban Philadelphia, was greeted with additional challenge in the form of precipitation, thanks to the remnants of tropical storm Hanna.
After a 20-man break was whittled to 10 select riders, Euser went away solo, to be later joined by Sweden’s Frederik Ericsson of Cykelcity.se.
But Ericsson, who soloed across from the main group to the break before his second solo effort to Euser, was fairly cooked from all his work by the time the sprint came. Euser launched and cracked the Swede to take the victory, with Ericsson taking second 13 seconds back.
With Euser claiming the spoils, Garmin-Chipotle teammates Pat McCarty and Tyler Farrar, whom had been sitting on the group in defense of their rider up the road, dominated the chase group with fresher legs, and came forward to take third and fourth on the day.
