Thailand -- 2008 Beijing Olympic Champion Jan Frodeno of Germany won the Laguna Phuket “Race of Legends” triathlon in Thailand on Sunday. Frodeno set a new course record on his Felt DA, crushing the men’s field in what he called a great start to his 2010 season. He beat the old course record by 3:23.
“The 2010 season has already [started] and after last year’s late start I decided to make an early start this year,” Frodeno said. “Having been invited to the Laguna Phuket Triathlon for a while now I finally made it and took part in my first ever non-drafting race with a time trial bike and all.”
Frodeno, who won the Gold Medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, specializes in ITU racing. “Of course coming from ITU racing I was eager to show that we can ride a bike, even though it´s not the one we usually ride on,” he said. “We use normal road bikes.”
Frodeno, who resides in South Africa, headed home after Phuket to continue training for 2010. “Two months of Stellenbosch will be sure to provide optimal conditions for laying a good base for the 2010 season,” he said.
