Stetina Takes Tour de l’Avenir Lead!

Tuesday, September 9, 2008
St. Flour, France, Sept. 9, 2008—A 181.5k stage from Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise to Saint-Flour was one to detonate the field, and it did just that.

Ricardo Van Der Velde won the stage in 5:02:11, and Garmin-Chipotle stagiare Peter Stetina, riding for the United States contingent, finished fourth, 13 seconds behind.

But the real story is told in the arrival peloton, who came in a distant 3:03 after Stetina. The gap vaulted Stetina into the race lead with a heady 2:27 lead to second place, Jerome Coppel of France, with five stages to go.

Tomorrow, Stetina will defend his leader’s jersey on a 212.5k tour from Saint-Flour to Carmaux.
