Tour of Missouri, Stage 1: Farrar Sprints to Second
Monday, September 8, 2008
Sept. 8, 2008, Kansas City, Mo.—The grand depart for the 2008 Tour of Missouri started well for Team Garmin-Chipotle, with team sprinter Tyler Farrar taking second in a field sprint.
The 90-mile stage, a rolling course from St. Joseph to Kansas City, was custom built for a sprint finish. But eager athletes led to a hectic finish, with a crash disrupting the sprint build-up in the final kilometer.
Fortunately, the Garmin-Chipotle riders steered clear of it, driving their man Farrar to the line. But Cavendish, who poached the wheel of Dominique Rollin, slingshot past Farrar to take the stage, as well as a few bonus seconds. Farrar holds down second in general classification at four seconds down.
Teamamates Daniel Holloway, Danny Pate, Christian Vande Velde, Steven Cozza, Blake Caldwell, Tom Danielson and David Zabriskie all finished safely in the main pack, 10 seconds in arrears. Tuesday’s second stage is another rolling course, where Farrar will plot again for a stage win.
