Sept. 10, 2008, Branson, MO—Riding the swell of a season that includes a stellar Tour de France performance and a bronze at the US Pro Championships time trial, Team Garmin-Chipotle’s Christian Vande Velde scored a time trial victory in the third stage of the Tour of Missouri, vaulting into the race lead in the process.
The 18-mile TT in Branson, Missouri was regarded as a tough challenge with rolling hills and significant climbs that would see big gaps through the field, as well as some time cut disqualifications.
Vande Velde’s time of 39:52, turning a blazing 43.66 kilometers per hour aboard his Felt DA, brought him home with a comfortable win of 21 seconds over runner-up Mick Rogers. The result made him a growing TT threat, as he finished ahead of luminaries including former TT World Champ Mick Rogers, rising powerhouse Tom Zirbel, even his renowned chrono teammate, David Zabriskie.
The team on the whole did excellent; Zabriskie finished fifth, 1:10 back and Tom Danielson was eighth, 1:23 behind. Stephen Cozza was 14th, 1:51 back. The stage victory launched Vande Velde into the G.C. lead, with Rogers second 21 seconds back. Team Garmin-Chipotle also leads team classification as well.
