Wells shows good form leading up to Cyclocross Nationals

Mafia Racing’s Jake Wells continued his road to the Cyclocross National Championships with an impressive showing last weekend at the Jingle Cross Rock event in Iowa City, Iowa. Consistency was the name of the game as the Felt-sponsored racer pulled off a bit of a statistical oddity in Iowa: three sixth-place finishes.
“It was kind of weird getting sixth three days in a row, but Sunday was my best race and I was close to a podium.,” Wells said.
On that final day of racing, the third through seventh place riders were together until the final lap. “The big hill, Mt. Krumpet, was mostly rideable,” Wells said, “but I slipped out at the top, and [Marko] Lalonde and [Brian] Matter gapped me.”
Record rainfall earlier in the week resulted in difficult course conditions. Nonetheless, Wells persevered. “I made a lot of bike changes,” he said. “I was glad I had two F15Xs so one would be ready in the pits at all times. I think this weekend’s performances should bode well for Nationals two weeks from now.”
For the final weekend before the National Championships—which will be in Bend, Oregon, December 12-13—Wells plans to stay home in Colorado and contest the state championships, where he narrowly missed a win in a dramatic sprint finish last year.
