Felt pro triathlete Becky Lavelle, 38, of Los Gatos, California overcame a swim cancellation due to high winds and waves from hurricane Sandy along with tight competition to win at the Rev 3 long distance triathlon in Venice Beach, Florida on Sunday, October 28.
Severe weather mandated the change to a run/bike/run duathlon with an opening 1.5 mile run instead of an open water swim. Lavelle marshaled her energy with a conservative first run and consistently moved to the front during the bike on her Felt DA. By T2 she was poised to take control of the race from then race leader and All American Swimmer Malaika Homo of Ogden, Utah. Lavelle moved into the lead quickly on the 13.1 mile run finale’ and built an eventual 1:28 lead by the finish line to win Rev 3 Florida for Felt Bicycles.
Lavelle, a Summa Cum Laude from LSU and NCAA All-American swimmer, is also a Pan Am Games medalist and former USA National Champion. In 2005 she was named Triathlete magazine’s “Come Back Athlete of the Year” then awarded the magazine’s Short course “Triathlete of the Year” in 2008. She was a U.S. Olympic Team alternate that same year and went on to win the USAT Multi-Sport Triathlete of the Year award.
