Argos-Shimano rider Kirsten Wild powered to a win on her Felt F1 team bike Wednesday at the Ladies Tour of Qatar stage race, giving her team its first victory of the 2013 season. The Dutch rider has twice won the overall title at the annual stage race in the Qatari desert, and the Stage 2 win in the Al Khor Corniche put her into third place in the General Classification.
Wild got into an 11-rider breakaway that gained a maximum lead of 3 minutes and stayed away to the finish line. There were a series of attacks in the closing kilometers, but Wild covered each of them all on her own.
“When they started to attack in the finale, I had not choice but to close the gaps, because I knew I had a good chance in the sprint,” Wild said. “I was still pretty fresh because I hadn’t had to work, so it worked out.”
Wild, the winner here in 2009 and 2010, said her team will continue to hunt for stage wins and see how things pan out for the General Classification. Two stages remain before the finish on Friday.
