Belarus — American Sarah Hammer rode her Felt TK1 to her fifth world championship in the individual pursuit Wednesday. The 29-year-old beat Australian Amy Cure to win the gold medal at the 2013 UCI Elite Track Championships in Minsk, Belarus.
With the win, Hammer added another rainbow jersey to the four she previous won in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011. She posted the fastest time in morning qualifying, and her finals time of 3:32.050 was more than eight seconds faster than second place finisher Cure.
Her victory moved Hammer closer to the record six world championships in the pursuit. American Rebecca Twigg won six between 1982 and 1997, and Russian Tamara Garkuchina won six between 1967 and 1974.
Hammer has two more events to contest at the Track Worlds, the scratch race on Friday and the omnium, which continues through the weekend.
