Beijing, China–With world-famous Tian an men Square as a backdrop, young Luka Mezgec finally got the win he’d waited for all year. The Slovakian sprinter who’d come oh-so-close so many times this season was delivered to line in textbook fashion by his Argos-Shimano teammates and made perfect use of the high-speed delivery to grab his first professional win of the season. The 117k final stage wrapped up the 5-day race and for most of the pros, the season. Needless to say, Luka was thrilled with his win and the team’s performance.
“It took a while to come and I made everyone wait until the final day of the season,” said a relieved Luka after the finish. “I knew I could win here after going close on the first stage, and it doesn’t just come on the final stage of the season but in the WorldTour which is amazing.
“The sprint train did a fantastic job to set me up and now I feel confidence in my finishing sprint. It’s great to show that here today.
“We’ve had great results all year with Marcel Kittel, John Degenkolb and Warren Barguil in the Grand Tours, and the whole team has worked hard all season. It’s great that I can finish the season with a win too.”
