Many riders believe twenty-nine inch wheels are the hardtails of the
future. And based on the ride characteristics of the new Felt Nine
series, we understand why.

First, when it comes to soaking up obstacles, larger 29 inch wheels
naturally have a shallower approach angle. This means ruts, bumps, rocks and roots are more easily rolled over compared to their
26 inch counterparts. Next, the increased diameter has a greater gyroscopic effect. This translates to wheels which not only carry
momentum better, but enhance steering stability as well. Many riders perceive a sense of natural integration with the larger bike; a feeling
of riding within the bike, rather than on top of it. This fit issue is especially important to large riders who often find it difficult to ride typical
26 inchers. When you factor in the greater tire/ground contact patch and the reduced fatigue from a smoother ride, and it’s no wonder riders feel as passionately as they do about the
Felt Nine series.

When we first set out to design our Nines, we took our time. We
knew we could not start with one of our 26 inch frames and simply
stretch it up/out until the new wheels fit. The geometry is not quite
that simple.

One of the key points was adjusting the head angle and the front
center so that the steering trail matched that of our 26” wheel. This is critical for responsiveness and
stability, and our Nine series nailed it. Another important ride characteristic was the BB height. We dropped ours to match our 26 inch
frames, keeping the center of gravity low, the handling stable, and ready to carve the trails. The trickiest part of designing a frame for 29
inch wheels was keeping the rear center nice and short while providing adequate tire and front derailleur clearance. Within the Nine line, you will see a specially-curved seat
tube and a custom forged+CNC-machined chainstay yoke to accomplish this goal.

29 inch wheels are quickly becoming the bike of choice for
endurance and 24 hour type races, and we know we will be seeing more Felt Nines at these events. Whether your looking for a race
bike, an all-arounder, or just another tool to hone your MTB skills, within the Nine lineup you have options. Look to the Pro, Elite, and
Comp for a full range of gears, or if you opt for the single-speed Nine Solo, you will experience one of the purest forms of cross country
adventure possible.
