Dutch sprinter Kirsten Wild overpowered her competitors for the second day in a row at the Ladies Tour of Qatar, winning Thursday’s 112km Stage 3 from Al Thakhira to Madinat Al Shamal. By winning the stage and picking up some bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints, the Argos-Shimano rider took over the lead of the four-day stage race, which concludes Friday in Doha Corniche.
Strong crosswinds in the second half of Thursday’s stage contributed to chaotic splits in the field. Wild’s Argos-Shimano teammates helped her stay at the front, joining a group of 18 that peeled off in a break. Several attacks were launched in the final kilometers, but Wild’s teammates chased them down, leaving it up to her to close the deal on her Felt F1 team bike.
The stage win gave Wild a 3-second GC lead over previous race leader Chloe Hosking of Australia. The overall title will come down to Friday’s final stage finish in Doha Corniche.
