Waregem, Belgium — Argos-Shimano rider Kirsten Wild won the Dwars door Vlaanderen race in Belgium Wednesday, closing out a dominating performance by her team with a dash to victory at the line. The Dutch sprinter powered her Felt F1 team bike to the win, beating Jolien D’Hoore and Monique van de Ree. It was a show of power by the Argos-Shimano squad, with three other riders placing 4th, 5th and 6th, making it four of the top-10.
“It’s amazing to win a classic race like Dwars door Vlaanderen,” Wild said afterward. “It’s always good to win, but to win like this after great teamwork is especially rewarding. We controlled the whole race and everyone was very motivated. There wasn’t a single break without one of us in it.”
After controlling all the breakaways, the Argos-Shimano squad swarmed to the front in the final kilometers. They set up the lead-out with 3km to go, and Wild finished off the effort with an unbeatable sprint.
Next up for the Argos-Shimano ladies is the Gent-Wevelgem classic in Belgium this Sunday.
“Gent-Wevelgem will be a bit tougher, as there are more cobbles and hills in it,” Wild said. “Of course we will go for the win, but we’ll see how it goes.”
