The Netherlands –– Once again Kirsten Wild of the Argos-Shimano women’s team proved too strong for the competition on Wednesday, winning the opening stage of the April 3-7 Energiewacht Tour in the Netherlands on her Felt F1 team bike.
Wild, who has already claimed wins at Gent-Wevelgem and the Dwars door Vlaanderen this spring, has proven to be the top sprinter in the sport so far this year. This time she won by making it into the decisive breakaway—a 20-plus-rider group that formed 40km into the 104km stage.
Strong winds played a major role on the day, with echelons fanning out across the wind-swept roads.
“I was isolated in a break of 22 riders and throughout the whole race there were many attacks,” Wild said after the win. “I jumped with most of them if I saw that each team was represented.”
In the end, Wild made the decisive move of four riders, and then outsprinted the other three to take the win. She took over the leader’s jersey heading into Thursday’s Stage 2.
