Margherita Di Savoia, Italy – After being sidelined for the better part of the spring with a shoulder injury, Argos-Shimano’s Kirsten Wild proved she is back at full strength as she collected a very big Stage 1 win in the 2013 Giro Rosa.
The 8-day UCI category 2.1 Women’s Giro d’Italia is one of the most prestigious of the year and in the opening 117k stage it all came down to a bunch finish. Kirsten, riding for the Dutch National Team along with her Argos-Shimano teammates Amy Pieters and Willeke Knol, bested all comers including World Champion Marianne Vos to take this coveted win in a bike throw.
Today’s stage 2 also resulted in a bunch finish, but Kirsten suffered an untimely flat and was not able to contest the sprint. In related news, the US National Team is also competing and includes ExergyTWENTY16 members Lauren Tamayo, Kristin McGrath, Andrea Dvorak and 2010 overall winner, Mara Abbott.
