Germany–Team Argos-Shimano’s John Degenkolb added another major win to his palmares as he sprinted to victory in the 2013 edition of the Vattenfall Cyclassics.
This prestigious 246k late summer race is one of the world’s top-attended one day’s. The event played out as expected with a couple of early breaks allowed some room, but when those leads got to the point of being true threats the stronger teams and bunch responded by pulling things back. It was a full throttle day and when the race hit 50k to go it was all back together and clearly headed for a high-speed finish. Team Argos-Shimano rode the perfect race both keeping John out of trouble and delivering him all the way up to 200m to go. In response to Andre Greipel, John went long up the left side to win his second major event of the season, adding this to his earlier Giro d’Italia stage win.
The only unfortunate casualty of the day was one of John’s chief lieutenants Koen de Kort who fell and broke his collarbone–his second of the year–during the final frantic moments. We wish Koen all the best in a speedy recovery and congratulate John on an exceptional win!
